Things to Do

There’s no single “correct” way to experience the Eastern Trail – just plenty of inviting ways to get started.

The Eastern Trail is currently a 65-mile, still-evolving greenway in southern Maine, stretching from Kittery to South Portland. It includes more than 20 miles of protected off-road trail, along with over 40 miles of on-road cycling that connects the Maine-New Hampshire border with the first stretch of gravel Eastern Trail in Kennebunk.

Different sections of the trail offer different experiences. Off-road segments are ideal for walking, running, biking, birdwatching, and winter activities like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. On-road sections are best suited for road cycling, whether for recreation, commuting, or fitness.

Whether you’re brand new or just looking for fresh inspiration, here are some simple, enjoyable ways to make the most of your time on the Eastern Trail.

Events, Meet-Ups, and More!

One of the easiest ways to begin is by joining a group activity:

  • Full Moon Walks – monthly gatherings year-round on the Eastern Trail in the Scarborough Marsh
  • Bike and Brew Rides – a series of socially-paced bike rides from May to October that start and finish at a local brewery or coffee shop
  • John Andrews Memorial 5K – our signature annual running event, featuring a timed 5K race on the Eastern Trail in Saco
  • Maine Lighthouse Ride – our signature annual cycling event, featuring multiple route options for riders of all levels
  • Other meet-ups – Coastal Run Maine, Eastern Trail Parkrun Biddeford, and the Piping Plover Run Club all host weekly runs on various sections of the Eastern Trail
