About the Eastern Trail Alliance

The Eastern Trail Alliance (ETA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization founded in 1999 by John Andrews and a group of fellow outdoor enthusiasts to build, maintain, and promote the Eastern Trail, southern Maine’s premier multi-use greenway.

Working in close partnership with its sister organization, the Eastern Trail Management District, the ETA advances a shared vision: a continuous, off-road trail connecting South Portland to the Maine–New Hampshire border.

Today, more than 20 miles of off-road trail are open between South Portland and Kennebunk, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

What We Do

The ETA advances its mission through three core areas:

Trail
Stewardship

We monitor and maintain the Eastern Trail while raising the funds needed to expand the off-road network toward a fully continuous primarily off-road route from South Portland to Kittery

Signature
Events

Events like the John Andrews Memorial 5K and the Maine Lighthouse Ride generate critical revenue that is reinvested directly into our mission, while bringing the community together to celebrate outdoors.

Community Engagement

Through programs that inspire movement and connection to local landscapes, the ETA fosters lasting relationships between residents, visitors, and the Eastern Trail. Recurring offerings include Full Moon Walks and the Bike & Brew ride series.

The Eastern Trail

The Eastern Trail is currently a 65-mile, evolving greenway stretching from Kittery to South Portland. It passes through the communities of Kittery, Eliot, South Berwick, Wells, Kennebunk, Arundel, Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough, and South Portland.

Today, the route includes both off-road and on-road segments. More than 20 miles are protected, off-road trail, complemented by over 40 miles of on-road connections. As new off-road sections are completed, these on-road segments are replaced with dedicated trail alignments.

The Eastern Trail is southern Maine’s contribution to the East Coast Greenway—a 3,000-mile route connecting Maine to Florida. Learn more at greenway.org.
